45 Years of Practice, Inspiration and Design 

Established in 1972, Bernbaum Architect Ltd. specializes in inner city custom homes and recreational property.  Husband and wife partners, Harvey and Kim Bernbaum, respectively lead the architectural and design initiatives at the office, also working with their daughter, architect Piper Bernbaum. Bernbaum Architect Ltd. has always been focused on eco friendly, low maintenance and sustainable design methods, utilizing passive and active energy saving designs and working with new technologies and design methods to build healthy buildings.  They work as a team doing architecture and interiors that restores and brings life to the diverse contexts of both the inner city and the country setting.

Over the years of working in the design and construction field Harvey and Kim have established an array of consultants and contractors with whom we like to work, as their abilities and ethics are comparable to their own high standards.  They create cutting edge architecture by developing a team approach that includes the client, achieving not only an excellent product but a very positive overall experience for everyone.

Harvey and Kim, with education and experience in architectural design and fine arts, have completed projects in many parts of Alberta and British Columbia though the majority of their work is in the Calgary inner city. Piper, who consults remotely, also teaches as a professor in Ottawa University of Carleton, connecting the office to the ongoing growth and education in the field.

Travelling extensively together, Kim, Harvey and Piper take opportunities to seek out design inspiration and methods of practice world wide, recently completing big city explorations of Paris, Berlin, Rome, Basel, New York and Los Angeles.  However, much of their inspiration still comes from the open-air quality of hot climate zones such as Mexico City and Palm Springs which have influenced their open and colourful style and is a refreshing compliment to their contemporary urban designs.

Harvey has served on the City of Calgary Subdivision and Development Appeal Board for 2 terms, and has been involved in the development of the architectural landscape of Calgary for nearly four decades.
